Question #1: Examining the Cover and Beyond

Post a comment on both questions:

1. In the title, the main character Junior refers to himself as a "part-time" Indian. Why does he feel this way about himself? What do you make of the two images on the cover? How could they reflect his personal struggle?

2. What have you learned this year about the treatment of Native Americans by white settlers? What do you know about reservation life for Native Americans?

  1. 1) Junior refers him self to a part-time indian because he goes to a white school with non indian kids but when he is back at home, he is surrounded by his native american family. The 2 images on the cover show juniors personal struggle because he wants to fit in with his native american tribe and family but also wants to fit in with cowboy look.

    2) I have learned that the white settlers took advantage of the native americans. i feel that because there was only a certain amount of indians with little weapons, because of that the white settlers felt the indians were weak. Reservation life for native americans is very hard and they struggle to survive. There homes and land is very poor and hard to crop

  2. 1. -Junior refers to himself as a "part-time" Indian because he lives on an Indian reservation and attends an all white school. When he is on the reservation he can be himself and act "Indian"; however, when he is at school, he has to act white so that he can fit in. He feels like he has to prove himself worthy enough to be in Reardan.
-The two images on the cover of the book show Junior's conflicting sides. They exemplify the differences between Indians and Whites. The Indian is holding some sort of stick which may symbolize how poor Indians were. In other words, Indians didn't have the proper tools and technology to get necessary food whereas whites did. Whites had guns and nice clothing while Indians were left with sticks and no clothes.
-These images can reflect Junior's personal struggle because he didn't have any money or nice clothing like the whites in his school did, but he still needed to find a way to fit in.

    2. -Native Americans didn't recieve much respect from white settlers. They were killed and forced off of their land and their main source of food, clothing, and shelter (the buffalo) was destroyed and taken from them. Native Americans' way of transportation was diminished due to the building of railroads throughout their land. Their horses were often struck and killed or injured because of the building of these railroads.
-Reservation life for Native Americans is a struggle. They often find themselves hungry, thirsty, and cold during the winter months. Stores are miles and miles away and they have a hard time getting to these stores. Native Americans recieve no help from the government and their fight to recieve help from the government is in vain. However, whatever help the government does give them, they appreciate it and work with it the best way they know how.

  3. -Junior thinks of himself as a "part time indian" because at school he is only around white people but when he is at home he is around his family culture. The cover of the book shows us that Junior is stuck in the middle. Junior wants to be able to fit in his family and with his friends at school. -this year what ive learned about the treatment of Native Americans by white settlers is that they were treated badly. I think that the Native Americans were taken advantaged by the white settlers. I think that the reservations for Native Americans were lands that were in poor condition, they could not crop anywhere.

  4. 1) Jr. thinks as himself as a part time indian because he is not like the rest of the indians. He is slightly retarte and goes to an all white school. I am under teh impression that he believes that he differs from the rest of the indians because of his thought process adn sence of direction. It seems like he is one of the only indians (from what i have ben introduced to) that cares about what he does and where he is going in his life. The images or the warrior indian and the cowboy show how he is struggling to come to a medium. He want to be both but might not be able to find a balance.

    2) Reservation life was hell for the indians. They were given crappy land that was barely farmable and they were not accomodated they way they deserved. Everything from their schools to their clothes were in poor condition. They were expected to fail at life and not given a chance to suceeded. The white settlers & the government at that time did not protect them the way they should have.

  5. Junior thinks of himself as a part time Indian because he wants more in his life than just staying in the reservation. He wants a good education and so he transfers himself to a white school to try and live the life of an Indian and a cowboy. The images in the cover show that he is confused because he wants to be accepted by both the Indians and the cowboys.

This year i have learned that white settlers treated Indians unfairly because they took their land and made them live in horrible reservations that had poor living conditions. They also made them attend school and slowly take away their culture.

  6. 1: I agree on what Brittany said because he felt like a hybrid as he can only act indian at the reservations, but when he goes to school he has to act white like the others. THe cover of the book shows the different sides on what Junior has to take to choose which life is better for him.

2: I learned that the Native Americans haven't been treated well as they were forced out of their homes from the whites. Their spiritual ground taken from them as they are forced to live on the reservations and be assimilate. The Native Americans were almost extinct with the buffalo.

  7. 1. In the story, junior refers himself as a part time Indian because he attends an all white school. Junior lives in an Indian reservation however acts differently when attending his white school, this is why he considers himself only a part-time Indian. The cover of the book shows an Indian and a cowboy and how different they are. The Indians seem uncivilized while the cowboys seem urban and educated. This shows how much of a struggle it must be for junior because he is living on a reservation but going into a completley different world when he goes to the white school.
    2. Native Americas were treated horribly by white settlers. They live in the poorest places in the U.S. They're land is not fertile so it was very hard for them to grow crops
